The T will be packed, Uber is possible but the prices will be very high. There’s not much to do other than watch the parade and of course there will be a whole lot of drinking. Going to be in town for the St. Patrick's Day parade. Been to Boston several times, but have never gotten to see the parade. Some bars require you to pay to reserve a table near events like this, does this happen in Boston? Does anyone have tips regarding being able to get a drink before, areas that may be not quite as crowded, parking, etc.? Fun fact, dyeing the river green was originally an idea of then Chicago Mayor Richard Joseph Daley (1955-1976) when he saw a plumber's pants dyed green from the chemical they were using to detect leaks in the river. Your friends from out of town probably came to party in the best St Paddy's Day party in the world. So give it to them. Lizzie Mcneills is on the river, indoor/outdoor and has TONS of space. That is a good spot to get cheap drinks and view the green river. You can branch out from there. I apologize if this is the wrong sub for this question but I have a group of 7 of us who are going to the city March 12th for the St Patrick’s Day celebration. None of us have celebrated downtown. The bar crawl tickets we’re seeing are $40 and we’re not sure if this is worth it. In Ireland, I do know that you celebrate St. Patrick's day primarily by going to mass. There's drinking, but you go to mass because he's the patron saint of the country and plenty of the country is catholic still. And seeing as I'm not catholic, I'm not celebrating it. St. Patrick wasn't even Irish. EDIT 2: many are telling me to not do this on st.patricks day and you are very right,however we have something that can only be done on St.Patrick's day and thus we cannot avoid doing this on that day. I 100% agree with ye but please be aware we cannot avoid doing this on st.Patrick's day. Not as big as Boston or Chicago, but there's a big parade on Market Street going up to City Hall, and all bars go green. Much of San Francisco was built by Irish carpenters and the Mission used to be an Irish district, and the SFPD was dominated by the Irish as well, but nowadays they've moved to the Western half of the city. I've always wanted to see the river green, so today we bought tickets to visit from Baltimore. We have river view rooms booked on the Riverwalk. I would fly St. Patrick's day solo -- I used to have a drinking buddy who's birthday was St. Patrick's day so we'd get together before she moved away but I would have a drink or two with her and secretly try to book it home to get the real party started. The parade on the 17th March is the main event but there are things on every day that you should consider attending. These won’t be as busy as the parade but will have some of the same atmosphere. The actual reason St Patrick's Day was celebrated so fiercely by the Irish, in Ireland, prior to any "Boston Elites" etc was because since 1641 there is a dispensation that the prohibitions incurred by Lent don't apply during that particular feast day. As you can imagine it has always been an opportunity for excess simply because of that. I"n New Orleans, the venerable Irish Channel St. Patrick’s Day parade, scheduled for March 11, also bans some root vegetables. According to parade spokesperson Jeff Delatte, float riders plan to pass out 900 cabbages, plus Brussels sprouts and bags of small carrots. But potatoes and onions are off the menu. I second the Green Mill suggestion for Jazz. I actually went there on the day of the St. Patty's day festivities a few years ago, and despite being relatively close to the madness and overly drunk people of Wrigleyville blundering through the streets, the Green Mill had a good crowd, but we definitely found seating. Going to share my first Chicago st Patrick’s day story. So 4 years ago I moved to Chicago and work an irregular schedule, I don’t even know what day of the week it is most day’s, I just care about dates. So I live in East Lakeview and was planning to go get Al’s Beef for lunch, I had only lived in Chicago about two weeks at this point. Sorry I am teaching you things and this clearly is not what St. Patrick’s Day is about. From what I have seen in America it is an excuse for Americans who may or may not have dubious Irish heritage to get absolutely falling down drunk, say any and every stereotypical Irish phrase, while dressed like something out of a Dr. Seuss book if he Duck out for a few moments when you hear bagpipes, and go back in. I don’t begrudge the places like Lincoln and Shennanigans that charge $40 or $50 covers, but I’d prefer to not get crammed in like a sardine if I’m paying that. Either way, enjoy the day.
